Coming to Australia (Sydney)

Post by royc »

Hello happy star peeps! I'm traveling to Sydney to visit a company office there (I live in Canada) and I'll be in town (with my gf) for 2 full weeks.

I don't know much about Sydney... so are there must see/do things? What should I not miss out on.

Also, we're big dancers and we like to blow off steam in clubs that cater to tech-house style beats - anything like that available?

I'm using the Google but I'd rather have personal suggestions so I can enjoy a nice local flavour.

Thanks!

The Sydneysiders should be able to chime in as I've only visited Sydney a couple of times but Darling Harbour was a nice place visit and have a wander around, catching the ferry across the harbour to visit Manly Beach was also nice, even if you don't go to the beach itself it was a nice place to have a wander.

King St Wharf (just down from Darling Harbour) is new and shiny, a lot of breweries.
A harbour cruise boat from Circular Quay or King St Wharf can be a great way to get your bearings and learn about the harbour.
Pubs in the Rocks.

The Rocks is the area in the city centre west of Circular Quay around George Street and the harbour bridge. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Rocks,_Sydney Its a bit touristy (very touristy) but has some nice historic buildings. However, if you're not dressed as bride and groom with a photographer in tow you may feel left out. The gem i reckon is the Palisades Hotel - top floor balcony is the place to be. https://goo.gl/images/wdJd1v

The Fish Markets are a great place to visit. Catch the tram there from Central station and eat fresh seafood bbq'd for you, grab a beer or wine and site at the outdoor tables (watch out for the seagulls): http://www.sydneyfishmarket.com.au/home

Queen Victoria Building in the city centre near the Town Hall is worth a visit - Haighs Chocolate on the ground floor is great Australian chocolate (peppermint frogs!). Botanic Gardens/Mrs Macquaries chair - beautiful setting with great views.

Go to Haymarket and has Sydney's best dumplings at Chinese Noodle House at Thomas Street. The special braised eggplant is excellent, as are the fried pork dumplings.

Train to Cronulla, walk to the ferry wharf, catch the ferry to Bundeena and do the Jibbon Head bushwalk - only a couple of hours round trip, lots of beaches.

I don't mind Sydney but it takes a special type of person to love that place...

Love it or hate it, it's hard to deny that it's a beautiful place to be.

The Nightlife, that used to be epic is deader than fried chicken thanks to the fucking ridiculously draconian lock out laws.

They've managed to wipe out what was once a vibrant 24hr City. I'm only in there on business these days.

Sydney's great, I just spent five hours in the airport because my flight got cancelled...
Still lovely part of the world and I got to listen to my hotel neighbors banging all night, so that's something!
