S5000 - 2019

What started as Formula Thunder 5000 will now be S5000 and starts next year. A more modern style, but low downforce formula including a halo. The guy who started the FT5000 concept will be the series manager.

High-performance open-wheel racing will return to the Australian motorsport landscape next year with the launch of the new S5000 category.

The series, which is positioning itself as the premier open-wheel class in the Australasian region, will boast a brand-new FIA-approved chassis, a powerful and cost-effective five-litre V8 engine and an all-Australian transmission system.

While some of the category’s original concepts draw inspiration from the Formula 5000 series held through the 1970s, the S5000 class is a completely contemporary and modern category. The car is build around an all-new Onroak-Ligier carbon-fibre monocoque, and will be the first Australian race car to incorporate a Halo.

All components will be spec to help control costs, with power being created by a sealed 5.0 liter, 560hp V8 Ford Coyote ‘Aluminator’ engine. Other features include a Holinger six-speed sequential transaxle, and 17 inch rear tires. An emphasis on moderate downforce levels will help ensure that driver skill pays a premium.
...
“The 2018 FIA-spec Onroak-Ligier tub, amalgamated with the V8 engine and Holinger rear end makes up a totally contemporary S5000 car that is going to blow people away. It will retain the modest downforce and mechanical grip elements that we have aimed for, so it’s going to be fast and safe, and at last, we have a serious, spectacular, high-level open-wheeler category – perhaps Australia’s version of IndyCar…”

Now to just find two dozen cashed up dudes to buy them and put them on the grid - should be no problem at all right!
(Fantastic concept but now the hard bit starts)

So there had already been 2 separate concepts on this & now they are calling it Aussie Indycar.

I love the idea but I'll believe it when I see it.

I couldn't hear what was said as I'm watching at work but that video doesn't even show any footage of the car on the track

Rubens Barrichello will contest the inaugural round of the S5000 single seater series at Sandown next month.

That's pretty cool. I have to wonder though how much interest they've had from drivers. They are running a test day for potential entrants to try the car, and now using Rubens to get a bit of interest in it. I'm not really sure what type of driver is aimed at. Its not really a young person's category in the way up the ladder to go overseas, and it's not really a gentleman drivers category which is normally GT3 or TCM. It's probably not even a V8 codrivers category to keep them fresh. It'll be interesting to see who is in it. Might be like TCR where is a mixture of guys.

A mixture that is mostly paid for by the people running the series at this rate.

First was was a good showing, some great overtakes on a circuit not overly suited to them. They are going to be amazing at Bathurst next year, the outright lap record should go well below 2 minutes with them!

Pity the race today never got underway properly to see how it would play out.

Will Brown’s overtake around the outside into the fast turns into the Dandenong Rd section was pretty good to watch.

I'll have to see if I can watch the replays on SBS, I went through most of the tech videos on their youtube channel yesterday which were interesting to watch.

Did anyone see it in person?

Last time Brabham raced there, Sambo threw Woodsy’s cat behind the TV. Brabham might have run off the road from the lead that day too :D

Anyway, I watched all session that were televised and thought it was great. Might have to make a trek next year to see them up close

If Tim Macrow runs round 2 I'll probably try to get to Tailem Bend to see them in November.

I’ve been keen since day 1. Hoping the tassie round goes ahead as planned and I will seem them up close in a couple of weeks. Be good to see TCR as well as I’ve not seen them yet but s5000 is why I’m going.

I caught them briefly on the Thursday at the Grand Prix last year and the demo laps at Sydney TCR round in 2019. Sounded good but really need to see them racing through corners to get a full opinion.

So I got out to Symmons a bit too early on Sunday, expecting the Hyundai excels to be the first thing I saw at 9am. I was sitting at turn 1. Well bugger me if at 8.50, an unscheduled session for the s5000. A quick 10 minute shakedown session before the practice day got underway. Well fuck me, at the end of the 10 minutes, they had already beaten the outright lap record (the race lap record) and my god they were quick. I endorse these!! Was at the hairpin for a later session and watched the races on Tuesday from the main hill. These are good. Sound great too.
And saw TA2 for the first time too. Those things are terrific. I actually preferred them over TCM. Rounding out the first timers, I did like TCR too but it was s5000 I went for.

Well they died
https://speedcafe.com/s5000-parked-over ... ity-rules/

Racing in this country is fucked, I think ARG blaming supercars licencing for all this is abit of a cop out, the end of the day the series missed the mark, COVID wouldnt' have helped but the racing wasnt good neough

The ARG thing probably had a hand in it. The category never attracted enough good drivers which led to already small fields constantly being involved in crashes in relatively fragile cars. If the best drivers in the country were filling 25 car grids then it'd be unreal. But that's never a realistic goal here and the licensing situation with Supercars meant we never even got a decent field of up and comers.
