That's amazing! To me ship models are the peak. Even the plastic kits can look amazing in the detail. It's something in time I'd like to aim at but I worry that mine will look like shit.

If I could do this, I'd be well pleased.

I was never going to get even close to what Roger did. He also spent a lot more time on research than I did, in part because it was before the internet and the one I built wasn't a very famous ship (HMS Unicorn, 1794). This is more or less what mine looked like:

Roger's Agamemnon is 1300mm long!

I could never figure out how to stick those decals down when I was a kid. Was beyond me.

I used to have all those days of Thunder cars as matchbox cars. Should have left them boxed and not crashed them around and drove them around in dirt. Probably worth something now.

Neil
Having great quality decals really helps as does warm water, Micro Sol and Micro Set.

Dexter
My cousin got a set off eBay pretty cheap of the Matchbox cars so I did these as a bit of friendly one up manship.

Personally, never built enough ships to try it and now it's a bit too late for me because my hands aren't up to the job any more.

Roger explained it to me this way: you ditch the supplied rope and use a fine grade of quality cotton and use what's known as a "rope walk", which is just a means of twisting the strands together (you also have to know the differences between a rope, a cable and a hawse) then run a small amount of wax to hold it all together. You need a lot of patience and perseverance.

That would need a lot of patience to make rope that way. But get it right and it looks amazing.

I've built a few of them in the past. Had Mclaren MP4-5B, Leyton House March and a Tyrrell. Always wanted to tackle the 1/12 F1 kits from Tamiya.

IMHO, the hardest bit is getting the planking right. The hull has to be perfectly symmetrical or it affects absolutely everything. Remember that there are very few manufactured parts in these things. I don't know how people like him build things soooo accurately. :eyepop:

I know for plastic models they have pre cut veneers for the deck planks. Seems a very easy way to the planking on what you have built JD.

Deck planking is easy. Hull planking is a whole different story.
