No it's not mine. It's a pic of the kit I want and the standard I hope to get close too in building and finishing it.

Dunno if you're aware of it Doc but virtually all Wild Weasel Phantoms were ex-RAAF machines.

I was aware the RAAF had a loan of a few Phantoms up until 1973 if memory serves me right but I didn't know they became wild weasels.

Did something completely different to what I said, which is not unusual for me.
Got a 1/48 MiG 21 MF and a cockpit to tackle. It's a nice kit.

Good luck with the masking!
(Masking is one thing that always scares me, every modeller has that one thing I reckon).

Re: Anyone build model kits?
Is the cockpit a separate model or an add-on for the plane model???

It's an add on. It's a resin cockpit with more detail than the kit cockpit. Any luck I can make it look like this. It's going to take some paining as the pic is very detailed. All those dials are paint.

ah cool,
I did wonder if the modelling world had cottoned onto the add-on market & that the plane didn't come with a cockpit.

Re: Anyone build model kits?
The kit cockpits are good but they look a bit dull compared to the detail parts. The cockpit kit I got was $12 and will spice up a $30 really nice even though you don't really see it. But some detail kits allow the talented builders to go nuts!

Re: Anyone build model kits?
I will but it will be slow as it's the first kit I've built in years. Got to dig out my airbrush too. But I've already got my my next kit in mind after the mig and that's a super cool SAAB Draken, then I might do a Phantom and have 3 cool bird's. Drakens are so damn cool!

Stunning! Just the water alone is amazing.

Yes, it's gorgeous. Looks like photos. In black & white, the water is near perfect.
The most difficult thing about ship modelling, in my view, is getting the scale colour right and he has it in spades. If you click on his name in the gallery, you can see the other stuff he's done, all of it brilliant.

That's awesome Vil! The movie is so dark you don't pick up on all of the details but some of that work is stunning. There's even an Alfa! Obviously taking inspiration from the 75 judging by the shape hehe.

Just this week I finally finished a multi year project to model the 5 main cars from Days of Thunder and here they are:

Wow that is awesome Jiminee.
So was this a specific kit/kits or a general NASCAR kit(s) that you painted in the correct liveries?

Re: Anyone build model kits?
A bit of a mixture. From memory the #18 Hardees car, #51 Mello Yello and #46 City car were from the original licensed kits, the #46 Superflo car was from a Terry Labonte kit and the #51 Exxon was another Hardees car.Duke wrote:Wow that is awesome Jiminee.

All the kits are identical and its just a matter of what decals come in the box. Even with the licensed cars additional decals are necessary as the full quota of contingencies were not included. Only the Hardees and City cars are mostly standard decals, the kit supplied Mello Yello decals are no where near as bright as the third party Powerslide ones I got which were just magic.

Re: Anyone build model kits?
They use to be a snap together kit if I remember right. But with so many after market decals these days all you need is a Lumina kit.

Re: Anyone build model kits?
These were all the old Monogram 99 piece Level 2 glue kits. I also have Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon kits to do.
I guess I need to do an early 90s Corvette or Camaro as a Pace Car now to display with this lot!

Re: Anyone build model kits?
I used to build wooden ship kits. It's only one step above scratch building in a lot of cases. Some people are really good at it and build detailed cutaways, including the ribbing and decks. There is a guy I had contact with a number of years ago who built the most amazing stuff I've seen out of a kit. I know he was building from Caldercraft kits, which are generally regarded as "the best" but at around $1500 for one of these, you'd better not bugger it up. The last one I built took me two years. You just never finish fiddling with things. The fit can always be better. The rigging could be more accurate. The wale isn't a perfect curve and the guns need better block and tackles.
Anyhow, Roger told me how he lays his own rope instead of using the supplied stuff. The hand made ropes just lift the whole thing.
His plating work is just perfect and the treenails (pronounced "trennels") which hold the planks in place look brilliant too.
Here are some links to a couple of his galleries. Unfortunately, these used to be much bigger and the detail could be full appreciated:

He also told me he made working scale models of old cars! Extremely talented and a nice bloke as well.
