iPhone 3GS - Issues

Post by r8response »

Earlier today i was given an unused 3GS from the sister in-law.

So i plug it in, and iTunes wants to update. Personally i see no harm in that, but if i knew what kind of fucked up shit was too come i would have slapped myself in the face.

Turns out the phone was Jailbroken with what i have no idea. So of course this has pretty much rendered the phone useless. Its permanently stuck in "Recover" mode which in itself is a load of shit, as nothing you do actually "recovers" the phone. Thus far i've tried just about every form of Jailbreak (redsn0w, greenpoison etc etc etc) known to man, i've let iTunes attempt a fix numerous times to no avail. Same shitty error (1015) over and over. No amount of googling has helped so i've turned to ARSE.

I don't exactly want to return the phone only after 24hrs with it being fucked in its state.

Has anyone got a clue???

Ive had my 3GS jailbroken before. I wasnt using the features of the JB so I happily plugged it back in for iTunes to do an update. Had no problem updating at all.

So no help from me other than to tell you that you didnt do anything wrong as such. Nothing wrong with updating it. Maybe the iTunes is whats fucked??

It's little wonder the brothers missus upgraded to a HTC.

iPhones and iTunes are a piece of shit.

Welcome to apple. You should be able to do a total restore as a new phone and wipe it clean and start again.

Not if it doesn't start i can't. All i get is the USB + Apple icon and thats it. Trying to restore in iTunes results in nothing more than errors.

Not really. I love OS X. I love my iPod nano. iTunes I hate with a pathalogical passion. iPhone was good until I got the S2, now I see what a piece of shit it is. Even with the telstra SIM in it, it doesnt get reception like the S2. So, no, not an Apple lover. But they do make some good stuff.

A friend of mine just went from a 3GS to an S2 (principally because his firm wants to develop an app for use in house and couldn't believe the hoops apple would make them jump through to do so). He's on Vodafone and was blaming them for all his crappy reception issues but they're mostly fixed since he got the S2. Seems the iPhone (at least the 3GS) works pretty crap as a phone for a lot of people.

iPhone 4 has always been a little crappy for reception. My 3Gs usually gets better reception. I'm hoping the iPhone 5 is better than the 4 for reception.

Hey r8... Your fucked :) Unused, I'm just gonna call BS. If however it was truly unused, head to your nearest Apple store and they'll swap it over (1015 - hardware fault). If your nowhere near an Apple store, they'll send you a box to ship it to them in.

1015 error is mainly for jail broken devices that's all I'm saying.

Actually if you haven't already, give tinyumbrella or fixrecovery a go. Just grab a .ipsw file from net.

Probably should have worded it better. Not unused, unwanted was probably what i should have said.

They used a sim card from thailand when over there that fucked it. So they took it too a shop who seems to have jailbroken it.

In the end, it doesn't really matter. Spoke to the inlaw not long ago and she really didn't give a shit. She hated it. So ended up buying a Galaxy S2 outright.

Been playing around with the galaxy S2 at work a fair bit. Would rather my 3Gs to be brutally honest.

What good is a phone to me that doesn't get reception?
Or one that relies on iTunes to dump music on?
Or one doesn't have an FM radio?
One that has to be jail broken to use all its features?

It is horses for course Dex. I reckon if I walked out into the street and offered people the choice between a brand new 3GS or a S2, 67% would take the iPhone. They, my friend, are what's called the ignorant masses.

I'll chime in, I'd be quite happy with that hardware (funny cant remember the S2's exact hardware specs but I know it's hot stuff). I'd just like its OS changed.

Horses or something :)

I was surprised when i saw it had an FM radio. I have MP3's already on it now, but sometimes i want to listen to the radio.

All it needs is an AM tuner, so i can listen to Laws in the morning and call him a cockhead every couple of minutes.

I don't think that applies to everyone, although I do agree that it does for a large percentage. I'm far from an apple fanboi. I have 3 PC's an iBook and an iPhone. I just happen to like iOS for a phone operating system better. But that's far from saying I think anything else is crap, because I don't. I just prefer one over the other. Pretty much all smartphones are awesome devices.
