OK, I'm going to override the part of my brain telling me this is a stupid question but why are the photos in black and white? Are they using Instagram?

I think I read that the black and white pics are much faster for them to download. So they do that to get a quick idea of what's what. Then over the next few days they'll download the HD images and also I think they have another camera on an arm to deploy.

If they are using a camera with a monochrome sensor they are also usually a lot more sensitive in lower light conditions. Not sure what light is like on mars.


I missed the landing as I was working what an amazing achievement though. Two very exciting moments in science this year!

Wow. That is as remarkable as it is unremarkable. The sheer simplicity of that photo versus the incredible complexity of what went on to capture it is mind blowing.

But I think decades of sci-fi has raised our expectations of what to expect from other planets.
