Super cool. I was surprised at the amount of the shock wave that went thru that mobile phone!

Some high speed frame footage
The Phantom Flex is an interesting camera. As far as I know, it's the only HSV camera which can vary it's frame rate on the fly... As you see in these images. They wouldn't be done via post production.
Vision Research make the Phantom cameras, and incidentally is the company that offered me a job working for them. I turned it down and a mate of mine ended up moving his family to Singapore to give it a go. But all good, I've been in talks with Olympus' HSV department and things look promising, so hopefully I'll get to mess around with some gear like this soon
By the way, if you want to see actual shockwaves and at a much higher frame rate than in this video (you need a minimum of 20,000 fps, and a very short gate time) you can see them on my site. http://www.mitchellimaging.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
You need a highly sensitive schlieren system to see them, and as such they are monochrome images. And to achieve such a high frame rate, the resolution has to be reduced a fair bit. But I guess in the end of the day, with that kind of stuff, half the buzz is actually capturing the things at all.
